“You Ruined Me”
by Criselda D. Mariñas
Poverty, I condemn you!
for dragging me down into the life of misery,
putting sludge on my youthful wings,
searching warmth in cold flesh in winter nights,
sitting with umbrella on wetting bed in showering night.
Shattered my dreams
like a fainting child dreaming a mouthful of rice,
and took away my life silently like a cancer.
Poverty---lowliness!
Poverty---weakness!
Poverty---sadness!
Poverty---reality!
Poverty---anxiety!
A life of poverty is rare a dream
The affirmation only I could sob.
